With Saudi Arabia among the world’s fastest growing tourism destinations, the country’s hospitality industry is gearing up to attract an influx of tech-savvy regional and global tourists by investing heavily in new technology, which will revolutionise the Kingdom’s hotel landscape.

From AI to IoT, to big data and robotics, Saudi Arabia’s hotel and hospitality sector is staying ahead of the curve by investing in new technology to optimise their revenue, guest-experiences and operational efficiency.

Saudi’s tourism drive to see rise in adoption of new technology in hospitality.

According to Nadeem Zaman, Chief Strategy and Transformation Advisor for the Minister of Investment in Saudi Arabia, the country’s efforts to boost tourism will see a rise in the adoption of cutting-edge technologies.

“As the industry looks to differentiate itself, the fourth industrial revolution – and in particular – AI and IoT are looking to make their impact. Expect to see enhanced guest experiences through personalised services, streamlined operations and efficient energy management solutions,” he said.

Tackling themes around digital solutions, AI, IoT and big data is the Hotel & Hospitality Expo and its three-day conference, the Hospitality Leaders’ Summit, which takes place at the Riyadh Front Exhibition & Conference Centre from the 10th – 12th September. Co-located with Index Saudi Arabia and the Lighting Design & Technology Expo, the show will connect manufacturers and suppliers in the hotel and hospitality industry with buyers in the Kingdom, all while showcasing the latest technological advancements disrupting the country’s hotel sector.

Zaman will be one of the speakers at this year’s Hospitality Leaders’ Summit, where he and industry experts will discuss how the hotel sector in the Kingdom will leverage big data, AI and IoTs to maximise revenue and energy efficiency.

AI to improve the overall guest experience.

According to Manit Narang, Vice President, India, Middle East, Africa & Turkey, Hospitality, at ASSA ABLOY Global Solutions, one of the exhibitors at this year’s Hotel & Hospitality Expo, both AI and IoT technologies represent game changers in hotels’ abilities to meet guest demands for faster, more convenient and personalised services.

“We are already seeing several industry businesses adopt solutions such as AI-based chatbots, IoT-enabled motion sensors and lights. These adoption trends are sure to continue increasing at faster paces as both technologies continue to improve and as more solutions become available,” he said.

Zaman agrees. He believes the future of the hotel and hospitality landscape in the country lies with the rapid adoption of new technological solutions, some of which can be seen in the industry today. From smart room controls, voice-activated assistance like Amazon Echo or Google Home, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality to provide guests with a more immersive experience before arrival, and robotic concierge.

“Robots are expected to become more commonplace. The UK’s YOTEL Hotel is expected to open its doors in Oxagon NEOM in 2025 and will feature robotic concierge, motorised smart beds, and a plethora of other high-tech options,” he added.

Leveraging big data and IoTs to maximise revenue & energy efficiency.

Nimirta H Lulla, Vice President of Operations, Middle East and Africa at FutureLog Middle East FZ LLC, one of the exhibitors at this year’s Expo, believes that the growth of Saudi Arabia’s hospitality industry signals a massive opportunity and appetite for sustainable technological solutions.

“Since sustainability is a key trend in the hospitality industry, it’s the perfect opportunity to make eco-conscious decisions in the construction and design of new properties, with IoT playing a huge role in the management and monitoring of water and energy consumption, and smart technology instrumental in optimising in-room guest preferences for lighting and climate control,” she said.

Lulla also noted that optimisation of spend will continue to be a key driver of technology in the Kingdom, and opportunities for cost-saving will remain a key focus when evaluating investments in tech solutions.

This year’s Hospitality Leaders’ Summit will feature the industry’s foremost experts who will discuss the industry’s major trends and reveal what’s on the horizon in the Kingdom’s hotel sector. Speakers include Tom Stevens, Vice President, Operations Rotana Hotel Management Cooperation, Imran Changezi, Senior Director, Hospitality Development, Diryah Gate Company and Waleed Fawzy, General Manager, Saudi Arabia Arena.

Olive enthusiasts will rejoice at the second annual Al Jabal Al Akhdar Olive Harvest Festival coming to the Green Mountain this September. Following the success of the inaugural event in 2022, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort is delighted to once again present this celebration of the region’s bounty, in partnership with local olive farmers and olive oil producers.

Al Jabal Al Akhdar, also called the Green Mountain, is known as one of the most fertile areas of Oman. Its ancient falaj irrigation system and picturesque farms have helped roses bloom and the growth of pomegranates and apricots for hundreds of years.

Seeking to reap the benefits of this rich landscape, around ten years ago local farmers decided to plant olive trees. A triumphant harvest the following year rewarded their efforts, and ever since olive trees have delivered a fruitful crop annually.

The Olive Harvest Festival at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort will take place from 21 – 23 September 2023, providing guests with a daily schedule of events with olives as the main star. From cooking demonstrations to storytelling with a Local Guru, guests of all ages can enjoy a full programme. Guests can join in the olive harvesting – a fulfilling activity for the whole family. The harvest is a great way to work up an appetite before sampling the best olives in a variety of dishes made by the team of chefs at the resort.

There will also be the opportunity to visit the local olive oil factory where olives are pressed. Visitors can view the entire process of extracting the oil and preparing this healthy liquid, which provides both a fascinating and enjoyable experience for people of all ages.

Throughout the month of September, which is officially harvest season, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar will feature special dishes showcasing the local olives and olive oil at Bella Vista, its contemporary Mediterranean restaurant located on the canyon edge with spectacular views. The menu will include delicacies such as seared cod with olive tapenade and ricotta-stuffed olives. Anantara Spa will also incorporate the super ingredient in a selection of its pampering therapies.

“At Anantara, we understand that our guests like to connect with the destination through immersive experiences. It is our pleasure to partner with local individuals and companies to highlight the wonders of Al Jabal Al Akhdar,” remarks Maren Kuehl, General Manager of Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort. “We are proud to offer our guests an opportunity to learn more about the region, its unique features and produce.”

Like every year, the appointment with Host 2023, at Rho fieramilano from next 13 to 17 October, becomes an opportunity to take stock of the state of the art and upcoming future trends in professional hospitality, out-of-home and retail sector.

In particular, the last two years have brought major changes in consumption habits, to which companies in the sector are responding with innovative products and multisensory and experiential projects, united by the pursuit of sustainability. Thanks to direct and constant dialogue with all players in the various supply chains, HostMilano Observatory identified some of the most interesting trends.

The digital sector is getting ready for the next generation

Digital transition is one of the big drivers of change: it is no longer simply a matter of taking a picture of a dish in a restaurant, but a true Digital Out Of Home (DOOH) experience. An immersive, integrated experience that combines artificial intelligence technologies, augmented reality and advanced use of social media.

QR Codes will no longer be used only for menus, but will become a channel to convey the values and characterizing factors of a location and provide traceability of products, including health and nutritional information. Customers will increasingly embrace virtual and augmented reality – starting with 3-D videos – while the back office will increasingly use environmental data from consumer spaces (e.g., via sensors) to offer a more personalized experience.

At the same time, the technological solutions that emerged in recent years will continue to develop: increasingly intuitive user interfaces, connected systems that can also be managed remotely, automation of routine processes to free up human resources, versatile and multifunctional machines, as well as energy-efficient devices with reusable parts or made of recycled or recyclable materials, all with a view to circular economy.

Sustainability becomes “Attention Economy”

The awareness related to the urgency to take action to preserve ecosystems has intensified greatly in recent times, partly in response to the increasing number of extreme weather events such as particularly hot summers.

Professional hospitality is starting to adopt sustainability practices to reduce its environmental impact, but a change of pace will be needed in the coming months and years: from strategic plans to daily attention to every detail – details that are noticed by customers – that might have an impact.

That’s why some analysts call this new paradigm “Attention Economy“. A paradigm that is developed, for example, through personalized and contextual messaging and forms of creativity, which, partly thanks to innovative technologies, allow to integrate sustainability “by design”, that is, right from the initial idea. In a sense, this brings us back to a form of respect for the eating and drinking experience of our grandparents and great-grandparents.

As a result of this approach, in the long run Attention Economy will outline a radically new landscape of the out-of-home, which will be much more appealing because is focused on experience and also more dynamic because it is thought to respond quickly to evolving needs, eventually reshaping the urban environments of tomorrow. Actors who will best interpret these changes will also gain a positive return in terns of image and reputation for their brands.

Projects and design will reflect this orientation to propose – along with increasing customization, which is a response to the growing individualization of lifestyles – more experiential and multisensory environments: enveloping, reassuring, where enabling technologies will be balanced with “friendly” materials, integration of greenery, and, above all, a renewed centrality of the product not only with open kitchens, but with new solutions to highlight natural raw materials and ingredients together with preparation methods inspired by tradition.

The economic reflection

Aiming for digitalization and sustainable innovation also means renovating machines, accessories and complementary items, as well as focusing on eco-friendly designs. A factor which, along with the post-Covid recovery, is reflected by data of the industry. According to the market research company Future Market Insights, this year the value of the market of global food service equipment should be 44 billion dollars, reaching 76 billion in 2032 thanks to an average increase of +5.6%.

Italy registered a positive 2022 and is among the leading manufacturing countries in the world, as confirmed by data from ANIMA Confindustria Meccanica Varia and its associations. Technologies reached an estimated output of 1,950 million euros (+5.1% compared to 2021), while food processing machinery surpassed 1.5 billion euros – 1,557 million euros – thanks to a +2.8% increase. The coffee machine industry closed 2022 with a production of 545 million euros, more than three-quarters of which were destined to exports. Professional food technologies reached a total output of 233 million euros, with an export/turnover share of 69%.

At Host 2023, new trends will take center stage thanks to the exhibition itinerary, with the participation of more than 1,800 companies from 50 countries, and to a schedule with more than 800 events

Particular attention should be given to the Smart Label – Host Innovation Award, which represents the award for sustainable innovation by HostMilano and Fiera Milano, organized in collaboration with POLI.design and under the patronage of ADI – Association for Industrial Design. The award ceremony will take place during the event and the winning products and solutions will be displayed in the dedicated SMART Products area and included in an ad hoc publication, the Smart Label Index.

HostMilano will be held at fieramilano from 13 to 17 October 2023.

With around USD 110 billion pegged for the hospitality industry and a further 310,000 hotel rooms in the pipeline, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is undergoing a transformative boom as it aggressively looks to lead the global travel and hospitality industry.

Over the last few years, as part of its social and economic blueprint Vision 2030, the Kingdom has made significant strides in its hospitality industry with the government looking to attract 100 million visitors per year within the next decade, investing billions in hotel construction and infrastructure, and building brand new sustainable cities along its coasts and deserts while attracting a swathe of foreign investment. Today, the country leads the Middle East and African region and is behind only China and the US in the global hotel construction market.

Looking to put the spotlight on the Kingdom’s multi-billion-dollar hospitality plans, and highlight game-changing trends is the Hotel & Hospitality Expo, brought to you by The Hotel Show, which takes place at the Riyadh Front Exhibition & Conference Centre from the 10th -12th September. With organisers rebranding The Hotel Show Saudi Arabia to the Hotel & Hospitality Expo to better reflect the current trends and landscape of the hospitality industry, the show will remain the leading event for all things related to the hospitality sector in the Kingdom.

“To better focus and grow our attention in the hotel and hospitality industry, The Hotel Show Saudi Arabia has undergone a rebrand,” said Elaine O’Connell, Vice President Design and Hospitality of dmg events, which organises the Hotel & Hospitality Expo. “We’ve modernised the event to reflect the latest trends in the industry, and we’re confident that this fresh approach will make it an even more engaging and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. The rebrand also means that there is increased visibility and access to a highly engaged and relevant audience, which we believe will help our stakeholders and exhibitors grow their business and establish new partnerships.”

Co-located with INDEX Saudi Arabia and the Lighting Design & Technology Expo, the show connects manufacturers and suppliers in the hotel and hospitality industry with buyers in the Kingdom.

Revealing the headlining themes in the hospitality industry this year was the show’s advisory board which brought together the Kingdom’s foremost hospitality experts to discuss current market dynamics and trends, identify the industry’s challenges and solutions, and map out the future of the hotel and hospitality landscape in the country. The findings revealed that sustainability, Saudi tourism, supply chain and logistics,  developing funding and financing, cultivating skills and honing talent, and looking at how big brands can support and drive the local economy, are among the major trends in the hotel and hospitality industry in Saudi Arabia in 2023.

Advisory board members comprised Saudi Arabia’s notable hospitality experts including: Richard Adam, Director Destination Strategy & Commercial Development AFI, NEOM; Tom Stevens, Vice President Operations, Rotana Hotel Management Corporation; Imran Changezi Senior Director Hospitality Development, Diryah Gate Company; Nadeem Zaman, Chief Advisor to the Minister, Ministry of Investment, Saudi Arabia; Saeed Albially, Vice President Development, Knowledge Economic City; Alessandro Maria Tedesco, Chief Operating Officer, Febc Group; Rabih Feghali, Senior Director Hospitality, Red Sea Global, Amit Nayak, Vice President, Hospitality Asset Managers Association, HAMA; Dr Ayman Alwaleedi, Project Development – Executive Director, Rua Al Madinah Holding Company; Jean-Baptiste Recher, Regional Vice President Development Luxury Brands MEAT, Accor.

The findings will be used to shape the agenda of the Hospitality Leaders’ Summit, which will be held over three days at the Hotel & Hospitality Expo. The Summit will feature government and private sector experts from across the Middle East and Saudi Arabia who will explore the current hospitality industry and offer insight into the industry’s future through presentations, panel discussions, and keynote addresses.

According to real estate consultant Knight Frank, there are currently 129,000 hotel and serviced apartment rooms in Saudi Arabia but predictions over the next seven years sees the figure jump to 212,000 rooms.

“We’re seeing an increased demand in the hospitality sector in Saudi Arabia and it is creating immense opportunities for investment and global partnerships in key cities in the country,” added O’Connell. “At this year’s Expo, we want to highlight the opportunities available out there, look at solutions to any challenges, reveal what the future of the industry will look like and move the needle forward in the hospitality industry.”

Other features at this year’s Expo includes the popular 5th edition of the Chefs’ Mystery Box Challenge, which sees 8-12 teams from the region’s leading hotels and restaurants go head-to-head in a culinary battle as they create a three-course meal from a mystery ingredients box. The competition will be headed by Chef Yasser, President and Founder of Saudi Arabian Chefs Association and dmg Events and will feature a selection of judges who will score teams based on presentation and taste.

Also, on the cards this year is the Saudi Hospitality Talent Awards, which recognises the skill, talent and sheer brilliance of hardworking individuals from Saudi Arabia’s hospitality sector. From categories like Restaurateur of the Year, Housekeeping Star, and Front off the House, the awards provide an opportunity to honour Saudi nationals from the hospitality industry.

Unilever Food Solutions, the global leader in professional food service, has revealed its first Future Menus Trend Report 2023, which has been developed to provide tomorrow’s menus for today’s chefs showing the latest trends with insight and collaboration from more than 1,600 chefs in over 25 countries.

The report was launched locally in the Middle East at the W Dubai – Mina Seyahi, during which more than 60 leading chefs and food industry experts had the opportunity to learn more about future trends while tasting evolved menus as part of a culinary showcase.

The report identifies the top eight trends: Modernized Comfort Food, Irresistible Vegetables, Wild & Pure, Flavour Contrasts, Feel-Good Food, The New Sharing, Mindful Proteins, and Low-Waste Menus.

“Identifying the hottest global trends is critical in our quest to provide solutions for chefs, who are contending with challenges ranging from labour shortages to tackling sustainability issues like food waste,” said Hanneke Faber, President of Nutrition Unilever.

“With the release of the Future Menus Trend Report 2023, Unilever Food Solutions is not just sharing future trends but also offering solutions-based insights and adaptable recipes to inspire chefs and help them feel prepared for the future,” she added.

Unilever Food Solutions anchored the report around the eight core themes based on global data, extensive inputs from more than 1600 chefs, global social media analytics and the expertise of hundreds of chefs who offer practical, real-world applications.

Speaking at the event, Unilever’s Executive Chef for the Gulf & Indian Ocean Islands, Chef Joanne Limoanco Gendrano, addressed the growing trend of Low-Waste menus that make clever use of ingredients to help reduce food waste and cost while maintaining maximum flavours in dishes.

She said: “There’s a lot to learn from various cuisines in the world where the whole animal or the whole vegetable is used in a dish because people need to be resourceful with the food available. That means maximising every piece of an ingredient and not just keeping the ‘good or premium cuts.’ This positively impacts your profit, too; it’s a win-win.

“Techniques that have been around for centuries, like fermenting, pickling, and curing, not only extend the life of ingredients but also create great complexity in flavours. And most importantly, efficiently planning the workflow in both back and front-of-house can significantly reduce food waste.

As part of the report, all eight trends include suggested recipes, ingredients and techniques to provide tangible solutions for chefs and food operators. Chef Joanne developed a Middle Eastern flavour with her Mezze Maze, incorporating a chickpea waffle, avocado hummus, beet pickle juice jelly, and moutabal.

“The concept is a savoury waffle combined with popular cold mezze. Often, mezze is served with a tonne of saj. In this recipe, the say is replaced with a gluten-free option, and the avocado hummus and moutabal are piped in the crevices of the waffle. Organisers KAOUN International and dmg events announced the launch of the eagerly awaited Saudi Food Manufacturing show earlier this June, at a press conference on day two of a packed Saudi Food Show. With increased market demand the inaugural edition of Saudi Food Manufacturing will raise the Kingdom’s fast-growing food manufacturing and processing sector to new heights, and cement its place at the heart of progress towards the strategic goals set out in Vision 2030. Saudi Food Manufacturing is affiliated with The Saudi Food Show – the Kingdom’s largest F&B business event to date, Gulfood Manufacturing and Gulfood – the world’s largest food and hospitality business event in the world.

The inaugural edition of Saudi Food Manufacturing, set to take place in Riyadh from 22-24 April 2024, has already garnered the endorsement of some of the most influential ministerial stakeholders in Saudi Arabia, including the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones (MODON), as the strategic partner for the event.

Ali Alomeir, VP of Business Development at MODON commented: “As Saudi Arabia looks to broaden its industrial base in pursuit of its National Industry Strategy, we see a central role for food manufacturing, given its growth potential and attractiveness to investors. By developing and overseeing integrated industrial cities across the Kingdom, our objective at MODON is to catalyse investment and growth in food manufacturing. Saudi Food Manufacturing provides the ideal platform to connect with the global food manufacturing community in pursuit of this, and it was a natural fit for MODON to be the strategic partner for the show.”

Saudi Food Manufacturing will bring together the F&B manufacturing industry across the processing, packaging, ingredients, supply chain solutions and control & automation sectors, providing a dedicated platform in Saudi Arabia to showcase new global products, solutions and technologies across the food and beverage value chain.

Trixie LohMirmand, CEO of KAOUN International, commented: “Through Saudi Food Manufacturing, we will unlock the immense opportunities presented by innovation across the F&B manufacturing industry, highlighting the untapped potential in Saudi Arabia and playing a part in the Kingdom’s emergence as a global F&B player. Investment in Saudi Arabia’s F&B sector, and the knock-on effect on food security and industrial diversification, will play a key part in the realisation of Vision 2030, and this is encouraging manufacturers to explore new technologies and innovative solutions to achieve this. We are excited to see global powerhouses gather at our inaugural event, ready to address the key challenges facing the sector, and transform food systems through insightful discussions and strategic collaborations.

Matt Denton, President of dmg events, added: “Having worked together to create the fantastic Saudi Food Show, Saudi Food Manufacturing will be our next step in developing a portfolio of international events servicing all aspects of the F&B industry.  These two events will become the catalyst for discussion and development of a broad range of topics affecting the industry, hosting content on white label, food franchise, food security and food tech.”

The Saudi Food Tech Summit will be a chance for international F&B manufacturers from these segments to gain insights into the huge potential for innovation and investment in the food and beverage (F&B) manufacturing industry in Saudi Arabia, given fresh impetus by the recently-announced Saudi food manufacturing roadmap, as the Kingdom looks to expand and diversify its economy.

Already home to almost 1,000 food and beverage production facilities, employing more than 200,000 people, the Saudi food manufacturing and processing sector is continuing to grow. On course to reach 50 billion SAR (approx. USD13.3 billion) in size by 2025, an additional USD 70 billion is projected to be invested in the sector by 2030. Specific growth areas include seafood, intermediate ingredients production, date production, and health foods.

Dr. Ihab Jaffan, Business Development Officer for First for Food, commented: “The Saudi Food Manufacturing holds an immense importance for our company, it provides us with an opportunity to exhibit our products, connect with industry leaders, and gain valuable insights into emerging market trends by participating in the Saudi Food Manufacturing event, we not only showcase our commitment to excellence but also position ourselves as key players in the industry.”
